Overall 6 - Food 4, Ambience 10, Value 8, Service 2
There is a "set dinner" where you pick a minimum of HK$280 per person - very cute and alot of choices. The decor was warm, snug and cosey with partitions for a private date or party. So far so good. Then the food starts being served, and the ratings go plummetting - but like I said, good for an intimate date - make sure your date is so interested in you that the food doesn't matter.Started with some bread for HK$10 per person. Decent bread, good pâté only I think the baguette was stale. I had the Duck Breast with poached peach salad, and the 4 slices of "duck" was 50% fat. The texture was of something like prosciutto, only it was thicker and moist. The peach tied the salad together and it was an interesting mouthful, but even the peach seemed like vinegar-dried-out canned mandarins.Next was the soup - Wild Mushroom. It was light and refreshing - I guess no heavy cream made it delightfully healthy. I got to try my partner's Crab Bisque - very good rendition - also not heavy - I would recommend this choice.I ordered the Rack of Lamb (+HK$30) for main course, but I don't remember the sauce since I was too busy chewing the meat. A tiny salad came with it but no dressing. I don't think I was supposed to combine the salad, lamb and sauce into a nice mouthful c'us there were only two pieces, and the meat was glued to the rib bone. Poor source quality - but for the price, I can't expect New Zealand lamb! Also, it was not cooked to order, but with such a small medallion that chewed like jerky, what could I expect.I also tried my partner's beef, also not cooked to order, so medium rare by default - now that was jerky! It was a workout, and most of it was hidden in balls of tissue. Our friend had the Ox Tongue - that was worthwhile and the sauce was decent. They forgot our side dishes so I can't tell you how the ratatouille was.Dessert was a French Rich Chocolate Cake which resembles a macaroon sized molten chocolate cake without the ice cream nor the element of heat of the chocolate inside. There was just something mundane about the dishes and we kept reminding ourselves that the price made it a great value meal. Worth trying if you want something different. Sometimes it's about the environment and people you're with. This restaurant really has a ambient setting, so go with a close friend to unwind on some wine and to cook better than this.It was disappointing for our small birthday party, and they didn't honor their birthday promise - some dessert. We had to ask about it like we were beggars and they had to ask the owner. Then they said we can have a Cherry Coullis so we sat there waiting for the it. Suddenly they show up to ask if we still wanted it and that it will take longer. We presumed they forgot or whatever so we said, "If the chef hasn't started making it, then don't make it." They assured us it would be on the way. Then we just sat, and sat, and sat, till it was past our bedtime. Picked up the check and left. HK$1100 for 4ppl at a nice french bist.. (August, 2007)
