The very best part of the Dirty Duck is the outdoor terrace -- it is very special. Unfortunately, the restaurant has a policy of not permitting parties of less than four to enjoy the terrace. By calling the restaurant repeatedly and by using Menulog, I was finally able to get the restaurant to allow my party of two to sit outdoors, on the condition that by 9:00PM, the restaurant would move us to an indoors table. At 9:00PM, the manager came to our table and told us that the time had come, and we did need to vacate our outdoor table, as agreed. However, she also told us that there was no indoor table available and we would have to sit at the bar (next to smokers, I later observed). I informed the manager that we were happy to move, but we had been promised an indoor table. She informed me that customers had booked the table she had planned to move us to. I had to remind her that I also was a customer and also had advanced confirmed reservations; moreover, we had not finished our meal. Overall, we found the food tasty and the value for money quite high. Two areas the restaurant could work on -- after the dinner, we found ourselves to be extremely thirsty which suggested to the both of us that the food had been oversalted. Secondly, we found the crispy duck, a signature dish for the restaurant, to be very bland, almost without flavor. That said, we found the baby squid excellent, the fish excellent, the chicken soup excellent, the satay excellent, and the beef excellent. The desserts were probably good too, but by this time we were too upset by the surly behavior of the manager and the rush being applied to us to enjoy them. (Lobster - March, 2008) |
